The original Avatar came out in 2009 and made a billion dollars.

would have thought they pump out a sequel ASAP.
kinda like Frozen.

I bet James Cameron is the only guy that can tell studios to work around his time line.
I guess having a track record of making record grossing films helps. 😛
(Avatar for last decade, and Titanic for last millennium.)

Makes a billion dollars, but oddly no one admits to liking it. Damn piracy. Makes you wonder then, will the 2nd make as much or more?

i love avatar. it is one of the best full movie experiences imo. the visuals and sound are incredible, and it's one of the few 3d titles that the 3d has actual impact on it, one of the best 3d titles out there.

hell i like it so much i even built an acoustical panel with that movie on it and hung it on the wall.

James Cameron is currently working alongside a team of screenwriters on not just one, but three Avatar sequels, with the intent of shooting the scripts simultaneously and then releasing the films one year after the other. It’s a pretty ambitious way to followup the highest-grossing movie of all time, so it doesn’t come as a huge surprise to learn that Cameron has now decided the project could use more development time.

I never saw Avatar, at least not in its entirety. I saw some extended sequences and along with what I read/heard I knew it wasn't for me. The only thing I am interested in from James Cameron at this point is a remastered Abyss on Blu-ray.

The story to Avatar was pretty uninspired to say the least, but it was still entertaining and nice to look at...... But what really excites me about this is that James Cameron is the master of making sequels that are better than their predecessors.

Cameron pretty much calls his own shots. He decided to take some time off and build a submarine and dive to the deepest part of the Ocean. I am sure the studios were just happy to see him come back alive.

Well, that didn't happen with Aliens and T2, so what other examples are there?

:hmm:

It's taking a long time because he's working on a new trilogy:
Avatar 3 (2018)

Avatar 4 (2019)

Meh, fell asleep in the first one so no interest in any sequels. I did hear Sigourney saying they were just starting filming recently and it surprised me that the films were not further along.

Don't care. Cameron is an insufferable d-bag these days and Avatar was so generic in everything but technical aspects, which it was stellar at, but shame he's basically said he plans on wasting the rest of his film career on expanding that universe.

Actually that's another thing, why the fuck does everything have to be a universe so they can make 50 fucking movies? Hope they start failing spectacularly.

Cameron, Spielberg, Ridley Scott, why are they all so intent on making the same mistakes? Oh right, $$$$$$$$$$$.

The movie plot, story was pretty much boilerplate. It was primarily a 3d showcase but the actual package was meh.

Not sure how he can squeeze 3 more boilerplate stories wrapped in 3d without the audience losing interest quickly.

It is possible for the new trilogy to actually have a weight to the storyline.

The first one was ultimately a proof of concept, demonstrating how to do 3D right.

Still, few titles go that route. I only care to see 3D when it is filmed with 3D mastery in mind. It's worth the experience for good 3D, it adds so much.
But the story was a resounding "meh" because it was generic.

There is SO much they could do with the world(s) they have established, so it is readily possible to get a little more serious with the project.

Guess I'm in the minority here but I loved it. Never saw Dances With Wolves even though I'm a small fan of Costner, but don't see why sharing a similar concept (that I'm sure DWW wasn't even the originator of anyway) should count against a movie when judging it on its face.

if you like anything popular, you're in the minority here, so don't feel bad about it.

if its a good enough idea, its bound to make multibillions

just look at Star Wars, Harry Potter, now Marvel is setting the new standard...

as much as I think Avatar is a bad movie because its plot is bad if not insulting, I respect the technology behind it. And thanks to it making a ridiculous amount of money, a lot of that is being poured back into production of the sequel trilogy, so I have to admit that I am interested to see what happens there.

then you might want to avoid watching DWW, as it might make you realize just how stupid/shallow/contrived Avatar's plot is and ruin the movie for you. Although it will still be cool/fun movie to watch for the effects and some of the creative elements, but love might be lost.
