I'm tired of norton hoggin my resources. I wanna switch to one of the free ones. So, based on your experience, which is the better program?

Thanks for the tip, i haven't visited this forum in ages, good to see new stuff up there.

Are any of those programs ordered in personal preference?

If your sick of AV's hogging your system resources, I would stay away from Avast and stick with either AVG or AntiVir.

In megabytes (Resources)
# AVG 6 Free Edition: 9.768
# Antivir free: 12.892
# aVast Free: 30.112
# Norton Antivirus: 32.516

Detection Rate
AntiVir version 6.30.00.17 - 84.50%
AVG version 7.0.308 - 54.07%

IMO I think the 3 extra megs with Antivir is worth the ~30% better detection rate.

BW86, I wouldn't completely go by those numbers. Right now I am using NOD32 and it is only using 4,316 K, however in the topic it says NOD32 is using 14.216. Also, I wouldn't base too much on detection rate tests either. I have seen ones where avast! leaves both AVG and AntiVir in the dust. Also, I don't know about you, but I am more worried about in-the-wild viruses, which detection rate tests don't usually test.

avast! is definitely far from a resource hog and it has a very good detection rate. I have tried all the free ones and avast! is the best IMO.

None of my memory tests are accurate, for they were made over a year ago (and will be removed in the next revision of the guide). Kooldrew, mind posting a screenshot of your process viewer (in task manager) while NOD32's realtime protection is running?

I have seen ones where avast! leaves both AVG and AntiVir in the dust.
Please post a link to this so i can add it to the guide. Every detection rate test (3 of them) i have seen shows antivir leading avast in detection rate.

I don't think either of the two choices compare to Symantec. It now has anti-spyware tools included.

Just to stir it up a bit.
Kaspersky seems to have the BEST detection rates of non-in the wild viriiiiiii.
NOD32 seems to have the in the wild bit sown up.

However, each and every machine I personally have installed Kaspersky on becomes a sloth. Which is a little unfortunate. Upto 80MB!!! are taken up by this app.
NOD is great.
AVG is great for older systems but not a very high detection rate (No independent review rates AVG as above 70% detection from what I have seen.)
Antivir haven't had a problem with.
Avast have had a small problem with, but wasn't worth trying to fix it - just went on to Antivir.
NORTONS No nnonononononononononononon - hog and is very hard to uninstall on some systems.
McAfee- I have never had the pleasure of testing.
BitDefender was good, but the updates weren't very regular (this was some time ago, maybe things have changed)

I thought I had it bookmarked, but I can't seem to find it.

You're right about Norton....I ditched the thing months ago and discovered just how much it hogged resources. I use Avast! Anti-vir and AVG are respectible products too if you can get 'em to work properly on your rig. Uninstall Norton now....if you run it simultaneously with other products you are asking for problems.

I chose other because there are better solutions than Antivir and AVG. etrust offers 1 year free subscription or you can get a free year beta testing Windows OneCare Live which is much better than what people might have you believe.

I've tested a lot of antivirus software, on my own machines. Kaspersky, Windows OneCare Live, F-Secure, Antivir, AVG, BitDefender and Norton. By testing I don't mean for just a week. I've used all the aforementioned antivirus software for months at a time on multiple computers.

What do I recommend first? F-Secure Internet Security 2006 It's expensive, $59.99. However, F-Secure has impressed me with these last few months with their Blacklight Rootkit Eliminator and and their news delivery system.

They were one of the first to post about the Sony Rootkit They had apparently known about it a full month before anyone posted about it, as they explain this here.

Don't be afraid to use the trial software for the month they give you. Maybe delay your switch to a completely free antivirus program for a month. I will warn you, if you try it for a month you'll end up wanting to buy it. I don't think that's a terrible thing, however.
