Avast: Free vs. Pro

Okay, I was looking at Avast and comparing the Free vs. Pro Both have the new anti-rootkit as well and the following is what the Pro offers in addition over the Free:

Enhanced User Interface
Command-line Scanner
Defining your own antivirus tasks
Working with the task results (actions on infected files)
Storing the scan results (history)
PUSH updates
Script Blocker
Virus notifications (task-based)
Task Schedule


* Is there anything that stands out warrenting the Pro over the Free?

I have avast! on 5 computers.

I bought 1 copy of Pro just to give the gang in the Czech Republic a few bucks.

I do like the fact that I can schedule a scan (which I do) but it only makes sense for me to do it on the computer which is on at that time.

Thanks for the reply. Do you think the added features of the Pro makes it significantly better protection wise than the free?

No, Ultralight. I just wanted to give them some money in appreciation for the FREE program. I purchased a 2 year license for PRO.

Save your money.

Why do I feel a little like Henny Penny here? Being a somewhat aged baby boomer, the story of Henny Penny was right up there with Dick and Jane for us. Nor do I feel like getting into any partisan dogfights with AVG users, the fact is and remains, both are primarily full featured freeware AV's that outperform all but a tiny set of paid AV's. And to add even more insult to injury, the top set of paid AV's do not command but a tiny slice of the total world wide AV market.

The fact is and remains, that unless users do buy paid versions of both programs, that merry go round will stop. So if you can afford it, by all means do help them. But truth be told, both the US government, other governments, and microsoft should should be helping these companies out.

Lost in the shuffle is any notion that somehow building a better mousetrap results in the world beating a path to your door.

Its still a testament to the fact that humans are stupid and greedy. When we should all be saying God Bless Avast and AVG.
