Hi, just though I would say that on my laptop, Avast 5 "became" disabled but Windows Security Essentials was able to deal with the trojan virus that was on it.

Right now I have Avast 5 on my desktop and kept Windows Security Essentials on my laptop.

What are your opinions/experiences/thoughts on these two free AV programs?

Just use MSE. It's what Windows should ship with it the first place. No need for any other kind of security software.

I was once an Anti-Vir user but I switched to MSE because it doesn't require disabling any nag screens like Anti-Vir did (do they still have nag screens btw?) and it also does the job of Windows Defender so that's one less thing running.

The only thing that's pissed me off about MSE was that there doesn't appear to be a way to setup when you want it to auto-update. There was a stretch couple weeks ago where it started trying to update every night around 9pm and it would actually forcefully minimize games I would be playing (whether it was SC2 or BFBC2) which was particularly annoying. But that situation went away after a while and I actually forgot about that problem until talking about it now.

I don't know if MSE tries to figure out usage patterns and then tries to update on normal downtimes or maybe they updated it to fix that problem, but it hasn't cause a problem for several weeks now, because I didn't do anything to fix it.

Select Update before scan under the options screen. Also it will pull updates from Windows Updates too, so check the time set there also.

Under Scheduled Tasks, the scan is set there. It might be hidden depending on OS. Make sure you check the wake up the computer setting.
