Somebody I know gave me a Windows 7 64bit laptop to look at that has the AVASOFT Professional virus. I believe I got rid of the viruses, I ran rkill then scanned with MBAM which found several things and got rid of them. Both MBAM and MSE finds nothing now.

The problem is I can't turn on Windows firewall. I have googled the problem and tried a few different things which involved editing the registry but still no luck. At first, the firewall service and the security center service was not listed at all. After doing some things I read from google, both of them are listed and running but I still can't start the firewall.

I just now thought of this. Does it make a difference if I try to start the firewall in safe mode?

Are any related services stopped or disabled? you may have to start those first.
I assume you've tried to stop the service and reboot and see if it works?

I'm don't think you can start the firewall in safe mode but i guess it's worth a shot.

Which ones would be the related services?

Actually, it is already stopped and when I try to start it, it gives me an error. Give me a minute and I can get an error code.

Okay I am getting a few different codes. When I try to use the recommended settings for the firewall, I get an error code 0x8007042c.

When I try to start the firewall service, I get an error 1068: dependency service or group failed to start.

The security center service is running and I have restarted it and nothing changed.

The base filtering engine service is still listed but I can't start it. It gives me an error 5: access is denied.

I have ran Microsoft Fix It and it identified the problems but could not fix them.

I believe I have the problem solved. I ran a service repair tool by ESET and the firewall is working. The BFE service is running and the Windows firewall service is running. Here is where I found the fix: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w7itprosecurity/thread/5366225a-46e7-4d6c-a389-8bd18a5c3aad You will have to scroll down several posts, the one posted by narenxp.
