Not for channels that are officially chartered through Avantgo.

But if websites use the "custom" channel feature to provide content for PDA users, then only the first 8 subscribers can sync to the channel. So if 8 people sign up before you, you're pretty much SOL.

Either way, it's one big complicated, nasty mess

What's funny is I was thinking of reverse-engineering AvantGo's Palm database to see how they store their data. This might accelerate my research! I'm already working on a project, but I see nothing stopping a developer from creating an AvantGo proxy server that does what AvantGo's servers do. I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happens.

GistTV let their contract with Avantgo run out. And that was always done as a custom channel. I don't even use it anymore (since I can't get my tv channel guide anymore) except to look at the weather. I don't carpool or mass transit so when I do have the time to look at a web page or two, I'm at the computer anyway. One more program I can soon delete from the old palm.

Yeah well it was done to save the company. The problem with custom channels is that even profitable companies/sites were setting up their channels as custom ones, meaning they didn't have to pay a red cent to avantgo.

I can understand why they did it... I'm sure they're losing money like mofos. There's no reason for anyone to be pissed off... no one paid anything for the service (other than the few companies that paid rightfully for official channels). What do you expect from free? This isn't 1999, where .com money grew on trees.

Avantgo was and still is an awesome service... no one has perfected that technology better than them. I was sorry to see the custom channels go too (I had subscribed to quite a few), but that's the way it goes when it's a free service.

on a related note, for some reason Yahoo! and ZDNet no longer sync on my iPaq with AvantGo. All I see is a "page not available" message. Did they loose their contract too?

Well Mazingo offers a free service to EVERYONE!

Ad they have many of the same channels that Avantgo has and it syncs faster and loads faster. I find myself using it more than Avantgo and I can create my own custom channels.
