Avance '97 Audio for VIA (R) audio controller problem

I am currently using the Avance '97 Audio controller on board with my ECS P4VXAD v3.1. I am running XP and my audio starts acting up. What happens is that I'll be running Winamp or real player and all of a suddenly the sound will just go out . . . I have to readjust the volume settings in the task bar before the sound comes back . . . The situation gets worse the longer I am using the computer. . . it starts out at maybe one or twice every hour. . .then pops up randomly and more frequently. Will purchasing a soundcard solve my problem? Is it the onboard sound?
