I doubt it will be out any time soon. It originally was slated to be released with Longhorn OS, however they dropped it along with most of WinFS, in a apparent attempt to get Longhorn out in a reasonable time frame. (longhorn, I guess, was designed to be a intermediate release between WinXP and blackcomb, which is suppose to replace NT alltogether. Or something like that)
So if it was dropped from Longhorn to speed up it's release and longhorn is suppose to be released in 2006. Then I'd bet that Avalon won't get released until 3-4 years from now, which is a long time after WinXP R2.
However going by Microsoft's history, my guess is that Avalon will never get released. Parts of it will probably be added to WinXP R2, and maybe they do something like making features from Avalon be integrated into DirectX 10 or 11 or something like that.
So you may get something like 30% of avalon into WinXP r2, and maybe 50-60% of avalon integrated into Longhorn's GUI. Then MS will start talking about something big that will integrate all of Avalon's ideas + a bunch of new stuff and say that it's going to be part of Blackcomb.
That's my guess, but I figure that I will end up being 60-70% wrong.![]()

On a sidenote, 97% of all statistics are made up.
