I have just taken a new position at a new engineering company at which I will be doing extensive CAD work. My last work computer was a Dell 2.66 Xeon Nehalem. I would benefit from a substantially faster computer in single-threaded applications -- that computer was too slow for me (it was the CPU not the graphics).
Now I am allowed to order a new computer at my new job. However, it looks like the current line of Dell and HP workstations are still the same as what I had before.
Does anyone have a sense of when the next generation (ie Sandy Bridge) of processors will be available in workstations from Dell, HP, etc?
I think the workstations are generally Xeon CPUs. Does anyone know how much later those usually come after the consumer lines of new Intel architectures?
I am trying to decide whether or not it would be feasible for me to wait for Sandy Bridge and it depends on how long the wait.
