Does Windows update have to have admin priviledges to update? Everything i can figure out points to yes. I want to make some users as restricted users in XP pro because they are installing stuff that they shouldn't have on their PCs but i had them as admins because of Windows updates and the Symantec Antivirus Corp. Edition will not allow me to update them unless i am logged in under an account with admin priviledges.

any help is appreciated.

Both Windows Update and Symantec's LiveUpdate run as system-level services, so I don't think the user you are logged in under matters.

it does, at least on the pcs we use here.
if you are logged in as a restricted user, it says it can't update.

How is your Windows Update configured? Download and install automatically?

right now yes, and everyone has admin priviledges.
when they had restricted, i tried to go to the windows update site and download.
so maybe if its set to auto right now, i can change it to restricted and it will still work?

that doesn't solve the problem for the Symantec AV though. if you try to manually initiate a update, it won't work under restricted user. everyone here has the same AV. whats weird though is that mine updates automatically, some pcs don't do that. all were installed the same way by myself so i don't know how mine does it but someone else's doesn't.
