Av metering with manual lens

haven't used a manual lens on dslr, so I was wondering will the camera meter correctly for shutter speed while in Av mode with a manual aperture lens, or is full manual necessary?

Looking at the Samyang 8mm and I have a 300D (old but good!)

Without an AE chip, it's my understanding that metering will work for aperture-priority (Av) and manual modes, but not for shutter-priority or manual. At least that's how the non-AE Samyang lenses work on Nikon.
