AutoTap

So I borrowed back my autotap (ODBII) from my dad because my van is dead. Ofcourse I just got a new laptop so this one doesn't have the software loaded. So I load it from the CD, hook up the reader, and oh crap - it wants some F'n registration number. I know I left the sheet in the box when I gave it to my dad but now it's not there.
Why oh why do companies do this? The HARDWARE has the serial encoded - there is ZERO reason for my original registration number. The software is useless without the hardware and the hardware is useless without the software. To make matters worse B&B/autotap is closed for the day.

So besides the lame rant - anyone know if there is some secret tech support number for autotap/B&B? They should have record of my purchase.

TIA

Last time I had an issue, I emailed them and got a reply. I still have my AutoTAP cable and IIRC there are a couple of free ware software programs that will work with that cable also.

Some of the examples I have seen are that the software is free, but only works with the companies cable (due to the hardware being encoded), thus preventing you from buying a cheap cable and using their software to access the info you need.

Autotap let you download the software - http://www.autotap.com/downloads.asp

But until you posted I hadn't heard of them...

Edit: Downloaded it and it seems to be the full software (appears the same as the videos etc. on the site), doesn't ask for any serial numbers...

Yeah, it looks like the full because it is, however when you hook up the reader it asks for the registration info. 🙂

Called B&B this morning and I should be getting the necessary info soon.
