Autos - Mods and how they affect the clutch and transmission.

I'm in no way a big car mod'ing friek so this will sound rather lame to people that know more than I.

I'm just interested to know if most people boosting their engine outputs need to upgrade their clutch and tranny or is it usually unessessary?

I'm guessing that most people don't bother and end up getting high wear rates on these parts.

Hehehe this post is totally going to piss some people off 'cause it's so specifically auto oriented. I sympathize with those people a little so thats why I added the Autos preliminary in the subject line. I think this might be a good idea for all car related posts in the future. What do you think?

Someone say Mod? While I can't mod your car, I can sure flatten your tires.

you might need a high preformance clutch, but in most cases I think you're fine. the reason most people don't change their clutch is because you have to pull the engine to do it, which is a bit expensive if you can't do it yourself.

You usually don't have to pull the engine, but it is a PITA to do. Most trannys are over engineered by a bit so it really isn't necessary to upgrade until you start adding major horsepower.. Like putting a turbo in a car, then it may be a decent idea to put a racing clutch into the car. Otherwise, with basic headers and intakes and stuff you really don't need to go through all that extra expense.

What type of mods are you planning on doing? If you just want to do the basic bolt-ons (exhaust, intake, downpipe, etc) You definitely don't need clutch/tranny upgrades. I'd say the only time you'd really *NEED* and clutch/tranny upgrade is when you add forced induction to the engine (turbo/supercharger).

If you were going to replace your clutch anyway, I would check out the local speed shop or your OEM dealer. Ask the parts manager what you are interested in. Many vehicles have factory high performance parts available special order right from the factory. If it were my car, I would not worry about the clutch and just run it hard. If it breaks, I would then replace with a heavier duty unit.

Like perry said, most drivetrains are engineered so that there is a lot of room to grow.
I can't speak for all, but I know that GT Mustangs' and greater(the 6s use a different tranny I think) trannys can handle up to 600 and some odd hp!

Clutch modification is not necessary unless the one you got wears out. Mostly its the syncros that wear out first. Not the clutch itself.

I recently "chipped" the ECU in my Audi...didn't have to modify the clutch or brakes any.

Perhaps that was badly worded. Not that anyone is a bad driver, but, a racing school such as bondurant, or skip barber will make much more of a difference that any modification to your car.
