Automotive forums gone?

Ahhhhh no more automotive forums!

I was beginning to like those. Now all of our car questions are going to be lost in the ATOT buzz. Why did they get rid of those?
 
TPTB decided to get rid of it after feedback. I think the idea is that they want the car threads in ATOT because people like them being there (i.e. keep OT varied). It's mentioned in another thread around here.

What or who is TPTB?

I thought an Automotive area was a good idea between car issues and speeding tickets.

Especially with Hybrids and gas prices.

I don't think three automotive sub-forums was a good idea but I think the idea of an automotive subforum is a GREAT idea.


What really kills me is "love and relationships" subforum still exits.

 
Automotive is a bad idea because then only people who choose to visit automotive see your thread, instead of everyone seeing it and possibly contributing like in OT.

Love and Relationships is different, because they want to allow that board to have less restrictions, which requires splitting it from OT.

Considering the amount of idiocy displayed in OT, I'd consider that a good thing.
 
we are still open to other forums (and there will be more to come later anyway).

having one auto forum is an option going forward.

but based on the initial traffic, admin, moderator, and memeber response the 3 seperate forum idea was clearly not the right fit.

in the mean time, I decided that we needed to let things settle down before we take a second look at automotive since it cuased such a stirr.

in the next couple weeks I'll poll OT and see how the general membership feels about having auto split off.

Well, thats good news. I know I'm not the only one who liked the idea of an auto forum, but from the poll I made a few posts down, no one at all liked the idea of 3 forums.

Truthfully though, theres really no need to put any amount of work into moving old threads into the new forums. A fresh start would be just fine IMO.
 
I kind of liked having a separate automotive forum.

My suggestion would be to have just ONE automotive section under the Social category. Maybe call it OT Automotive or something like that.

Ummm, that is a good thing. Now OT idiots that post the exact same thing in every car thread (irrelevant of what the thread is about) will have to do extra work to be trolls. Or better yet, they can stop trolling in the first place.
 
Some people just won't browse multiple forums, myself included. When I'm in OT, I click on thread titles that interest me, regardless of topic, some I contribute to, some I don't. OT was meant to be a one-stop shop for things not tech related. The chances of me browsing a separate Auto forum or Consumer Electronics forum, or even the YAGT forum are slim, and I imagine I'm not the only OT regular that feels that way. Anandtech is supposed to be a tech forum, that has an active off-topic area. With all these sub-forums, it will become something else.

i dunno having it all in OT means theres scope for a lot of people to contribute

but at the same time, you get alot of people/nazi's running their mouths at you for speeding or buying the wrong car or asking a silly question.

by having it in a dedicated forum, its likely that you'll get less response, but hopefully the responses you do get will at least be more useful than "WTF you bought a v6 mustang?" or "you were speeding dumbass, i hope they lock you up and throw away the key".

definately a quality vs quantity thing. me id rather have 5 posts all suggesting useful things than 25 posts full of people telling me i cant spell, shouldnt speed, should of bought such n such a car and that i am tool for asking whether i can get these bling rimz

I agree completely. I posted a thread about an idle problem pre-split and I got (literally) 15 jackass answer. Once they split it the thread was re-spositioned and I got 5 or 6 useful and meaningful answers.

I agree with every point you've made.

ATOT is a unique forum and is also a fun forum to be a part of, and I think that?s why we have such a large user base for just one forum.

What makes it great is the amount of traffic that passes through just one forum.

Well just because there is a seperate Auto & Transport Forum doesn't mean you still can't talk about car stuff in OT.

But having the seperate forum allows more serious discussion, questions and answers.

OT tends to be pretty juvenile in nature on all subjects.
