It seems to me that unless you immediately run updates as soon as you do a fresh install of windows, that the automatic updates feature is gone, never to return, and the only way to update is to go to windows update, which is annoying.

How do I get the tab back?

Microsoft has a knowledge base article here that explains how to go about it by either using Local Policy Editor or else the registry editor. I thought you could do it through the tab but, I guess it does disappear once you tell it not to after the first install/usage. Weird. Anyways, this gives you a little more configuration over it anyways.

Are you talking WinXP here? I've never seen that behavior with Win2000 Pro.

Windows2000 Service Pack 3 (or 4) will install the Automatic Updates feature on a system with Win2000 gold, SP1, or SP2, so try installing SP4.

Being to lazy to read the knowledge base article, another way to do it that they may not have listed would be to create another user in windows with administrative privileges and then log on as that user. At that point browse to Documents and settings and rename your original username?s profile to whateveritwas.old and then go back and log on as your normal name. At this point the automatic update thingie should pop up like normal.
