automatic updates nuissance

i just recovered a friend's hp system from the recovery cds, installed sp2 and all the other critical updates from the windows update site. everything seems fine however the yellow shield that alerts of updates is still in the system tray and clicking on it and selecting "express" shows that there are 0 updates to install. the icon just won't go away. any ideas?

download process explorer from sysinternals. find the windows process that autoupdate is running under, and kill it. it should go away forever.

why would i have to use that instead of windows task manager? wouldn't it just re-appear?

well, in task manager, you can't see what system process autoupdate.exe is running under. thats what you want to delete. ive done it before, it should work.

ok. i'll give it a shot. hopefully it will work and won't interfere with future updates as they become available.

you should just be able to disable the auto update service under admin tools/services

i know that i have the option to disable auto update under the appropriate tab in the system properties; however, that would prevent my friend from being notified when new updates become available. i simply want to fix the issue of the autoupdate notifying the user that there are 0 updates to install.

i found the processes under waupdate.exe with process explorer. the icon went away but came back a few seconds later as i had suspected it would. i'm thinking there may be an update to install, a setup file to run and repair the installation, or something in the registry that can be adjusted. i've searched around the internet and cannot find anything related to the topic though.

im not really sure about any registry things or anything. but, when the process came back again, did you try just killinging it, untill it went away?

Maybe it's warning you about outdated virus definitions instead?
Make sure antivirus & firewall are OK.
