Automatic TURBO Alternator VS Non-TURBO alternator

Hi all, I just have a question about my alternator in my 2000 Subaru Legacy B4 Twin turbo. I think my alternator is dying and trying to find a second hand one. I'm looking at 1999 Subaru legacy RS non-turbo alternator but don't know if it's gonna be good enough to handle a turbo charged engine? I don't want to buy this to have it break down again 🙁 ( I know this forum may not be the best place to ask this kind of question but I jus happened to be surfing on Anandtech forums so.. 🙂 )

Thanks for all your help!

Simply having a turbo or not has absolutely zero effect on what output is necessary from the alternator.

HOWEVER, it is very possible that the turbocharged engine mounts the alternator in a different location or with a different style mount in order to accomodate the turbocharger's additional plumbing. It is also possible that, since the turbo car is generally more luxurious, it has additional electronics that require a higher-output alternator (note that this is NOT inherently due to the turbocharging, but rather to additional, unrelated, luxury items).

If the alternator will physically fit and if it is rated at the same output, there should be no reason that the alternator from the non-turbo engine wouldn't work, but chances are that they are different parts. Consult the parts manual for your vehicle. You do have the factory shop manuals, right?

Unless I'm wrong, there was no US-spec 2000 Legacy with a turbo, let alone a twin turbo.
The engine is a 2.5L 165hp H4.

Why would he post this here as his first post, instead of say, a Subaru forum?

Thanks for your quick replies Zenmervolt and OS 🙂 the mounting location/style is the same but Ill ask the person for specific part number and compare the output.

I did post this in the forumsubaru.com but hardly anybody reads any posts there so I decided to post this on Anandtech.

Thanks again!

You could also try asking on nasioc.com or ultimatesubaru.org

1999 - 2.2l/2.5l : Hitachi LR185-702

2000 - 2.5l - Mitsubishi A2TB2891

Might want to double check first.

Another excellent possibility is to get yours repaired. It will cost much less than a new one, and the shops I have dealt with do better work than the reman shops.
The used one may leave you on the side of the road any time. At least get it tested.

I wish I'd remembered this advice, it's very good. A good shop can re-wind and repair your current alternator and you'll have an even better part than a used or rebuilt unit off of a shelf somewhere.
