automatic transmissions are so complicated

No matter how many diagrams I look at, I still don't understand it. Yes, I've looked on howstuffworks.com, but I just don't understand them.

I think the auto tranny is the only mechanical system in a car I don't understand how it works. Whoever thought up the design for it was a freaking genius.

Planetary gear assy.in the auto trans is interesting. Chrysler and GM use 5 and 6 pinion planetary assy. Ford uses a 4 pinion and is real light and trashy. Can you imagine only a 4 pinion planetary on a full size F 150 truck?? The dakota is a mid size truck and uses a 5 pinion assy and is built much heavier then the ford.....

I look at women the same way. No matter how much I try, I can't figure out how they were put together or how they work internally.

Design flaw.

Oh, I've pretty much got down pat how they work internally, virtually mastered it.

Wait...are we talking about the same 'internal' workings?

:D

And yeah, same here.. probably the only part of a car that I don't really know a whole lot about the innards..

It's the one area of auto repair that took me several months to get right, then they throw electronics into the whole system to control shift point and torque converter lock-up better. The best way to learn is take a class at your local community college.

Automatic trannies are simple once you understand two principles, Hydraulic actuation of brake bands/servos and Planetary gear reduction.

Planetary Gear Reduction

There are several planetary gear clusters in a auto, these are connected one after another, when these clusters are locked together using hydraulic actuators (servos), you get a change in output shaft speed, all that is needed is a device to control hydraulic pressure, this is accomplished through the use of a valve body and governors.

Mind you, this is a very simplified explanation for the ease of understanding.

Starting to understand a little, but it's still not as clear as say, a manual gearbox. Those are a lot simpler to understand. ;)
