Automatic Parsing in Edit Box

I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to prevent the automatic parsing of BBcode inside the text editing box. Of course parsing is desired in the preview and the actual post, but I find auto-parsing of my working text to be very annoying. The checkbox below the edit box seems to have no effect on anything for me. Then there is the noparse function, which affects everything globally (unwanted).

What am I missing here?

Sorry, but I have nothing. I don't believe it to be possible to turn off. The closest thing you can do is to use a code box.

I guess it's a nitpicky complaint, yet I have experience on many boards, and this is the only one on which this behavior manifests itself. It's just odd to me. I want to have more control over the code within the editing field, but if it is parsed after a preview, I can no longer control or modify it easily.

Does using noparse tags around content inside of which you don't want BBcode parsing to occur help?

Yes, noparse disables ALL parsing, which can be helpful when trying to work around images, but ideally we'd see the parsed code up above in the preview screen, and the raw text in the editor. It's just so weird to me that it is not this way, I've been frequenting bulletin boards for almost 20 years, and can't remember ever experiencing this behavior. Ah, well. I like it well enough here to just ignore it...
