I have a 2tb WD MyBook external drive that I have used for some time to back up my RAID0 drives (two partitions) onto itself using WD's own software. Unfortunately, I didn't read closely or notice that it doesn't back up exe or dll files (among others).

Tons of this stuff was unpacked install files for various software and Flight Simulator addons that were left completely useless. My own dumb fault, but I never considered it would be skipping files (I get why, though). Unfortunately, I wanted to reconfigure the space between the partitions and figured "hey, I've got them backed up, I'll just clear them, resize, and restore!". Yeah, not.

Anyway, what are some recommendations for payware or freeware software that will basically sit quietly in the background, and copy any changes I make to the backup external? On demand was nice, but I suppose scheduled batch jobs are OK, too.

Running Windows 10 Pro. Thanks guys.

Sounds like you want incremental backups.
If you are willing to pay for Acronis, or Macrium (or...) then those can do that.

On the free side, you can use either of those above, but, you can't do incremental backups. HD makers usually offer a crippled version of Acronis as well, in case you want to try it, or you can get full version of Acronis (or...) and do the free trial for 30 days and see how you like it.

The free version of Acronis (if you have a WD HDD in your system... I don't know if the externals will work) you can do scheduled backups (i.e. every night when your system is idle, etc.) You can do a full, complete backup, or just incremental backups (which, I suppose, you could also do periodically throughout the day.)

Willing to pay for Acronis...will check it out.

The one thing I really liked about the WD software was that it seemed to literally copy the drive, and my stuff was located in a folder on the external. If you saved a file, it immediately went to the WD too. You could click in there and there everything was, just as if you were looking at the actual drive. Obviously, I didn't look close enough.

Thanks guys.
