Is there a way to delete mail on the google server when it is deleted in the apple mail 3.5 client.

i tried to change the inbound mail protocol from pop to imap but no luck. can you guys help here.

I don't think you can 'change' your mail protocol from pop to imap. You will have to create a new mailbox with IMAP.

i did manage to change the protocol from pop to imap, though when i look at the account, the account says gmail (gmail pop).

the summary does state the incoming mail server is imap.gmail.com. i tried to create a new account afresh with imap settings, but ended up creating a pop account again (mail walkthrough/wizard did not allow me to select smtp as an input mail protocol)

no you didn't change the 'protocol', you just changed the server name from pop.google.com to imap.google.com, two urls that most likely are pointing to the same place. this is why the account still says 'gmail pop'.

just create a new IMAP mailbox and you should be good.

edit: wait, did you say at the end that you tried that and it didn't work? i'm confused

ok now i know what's going on. sorry i misled you. my excuse is that because i'm new to Mail :)

you should do a File-Add account instead of 'new mailbox'

thanks for the tips. did not realize that imap.gmail.com is simply a url

i tried it but i had the "automatic set up account" checkbox checked and this leads the user down the pop route.

hey is smtp the way to purge mails on the server end?

go to Mail - Preferences - Accounts and from there you should be able to delete the accounts you don't need. be careful when deleting the original POP account. if there's something that you already downloaded that has been deleted from the server, you will lose it completely. IMAP only shows what's currently on the server.

SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) is the protocol that you use to send e-mail out to the destination.

thanks for the response chronos.

i have gone to mail --> preferences --> accounts --> advanced and unchecked the enable this account, thus disabling both the pop accounts.

i currently have under mailboxes, three folders - inbox, outbox and sent
this is followed by reminders, rss and then gmail3 (which is the account i created).

should i be using the folders under mailboxes or the folders which are mirroring the gmail account.

gmail 3 mirrors the folder structure when i access gmail via http/https.

i only seem to be able to access the header (subject, date, sender) of the mail, can not access the body of the mail. when i try to access it in the gmail3 "collection". i get a loading for a long time but no message body

i also have a problem with the huge mail (7000 mails ) on my gmail account. last time i stopped the synch mechanism from downloading all my mail to my apple mail client. any tips here?

I am guessing that you can use whichever setting you find most comfortable. I don't know for sure as I'm not using Mail.app with GMail, although I have two IMAP accounts setup.

In my setup, the main inboxes for both accounts are under Mailboxes, but I put everything else (IMAP folders that I created manually, junk, sent, trash, etc) under the particular heading of each account.

thanks for the tips guys.

i deleted a whole bunch of mail, go my mailbox size to around 5000 megs. i think the mail client was trying to synchronise with the google server.

hey is there an option to just view the header and delete the mail without looking at the body in the apple mail client. that is one of the advantages of using imap, correct?

chronos, what client are you using with your mac?
