I want to get an automatic (keyless/remote) car starter for Nissan Murano. I've googled for them, but I didn't find anything conclusive, especially for the Murano. Does anyone have any experience with purchasing and installing car starters? Thanks.

you'll need an alarm most of the time to get the function. It's fairly straightforward on an automatic car, but with a manual it's a little more involved and dangerous.

It's typically a better idea just to let someone like car toys install it for $100ish or so, and often they will do it at a reduced or free cost if you purchase from them.

You can usually get them for any car; mostly they are generic with a few options to help them fit your car better. Like, if you have power door locks or power trunk release, you'll probably pay a bit extra to have that functionality incorporated into the key fob that runs your auto-start. In the cases I've had them installed, it was like $25 or something cheap.

I would recommend finding a good local auto-start place to buy from and have the install done at. They're usually the same places that sell car alarms and stereos. Pay attention to how much range you get (some starters can remote-start from a mile away; others only 1/4 mile) and safety features. Otherwise... best thing to do is just head down to the shop for some education.

edit: the sticky part comes with factory car alarms: Sometimes the shop needs to install a new relay or somesuch to keep the stock alarm from flipping out when the new kit is installed. I think for my Saturn, it was another $25 to do that. You can get nickel-and-dimed if your car has bells and whistles, but all in all, it IS a good investment especially if you live in the cold country.

good advice except for the range, it seems like the low end is closer to 30 feet and the extreme high end maybe, maybe 1/4 of a mile and thats being very generous.

I'd love to see a car that can unlock its doors when you are still about 17 footballfields away but i really dont think thats possible.

What auto starts are in your area that can't beat 1/4 mile?? WHile the 1-mile range is itself useless as people don't usually park that far away from themselves... where it helps is when you're inside a big concrete building and your car's across the street... a 1-mile range transmitter is far more likely to power through the concrete and still start your car just 300 feet away. I've never tried unlocking doors from that far away... but I have started my car from about 1/2 mile in the past... one end of a big shopping mall to the parking lot on the opposite side. Never tried anything further.
