Automated NAS backups to the cloud? What services to use with Synology NASes?

I use Synology NASes. Last week Bell Canada announced all of Toronto is getting access to Gigabit FTTH. Thus, I started wondering about cloud backups. What are the best options for cloud backups of the NAS? I'm talking storage providers and software applications/add-ons.

BTW, my neighbourhood won't be the first to get it. They say 50000 homes by the end of summer, but the whole city by 2017. That seems far too optimistic a timeline to me, nonetheless, it got me thinking.

The only cloud backups I use right now are Apple for my iDevices and Macs, and the free Dropbox. So, I only have a few GB per service. For viable online backups, I'd need something like 200 GB.

Hmm... That forum link says it won't work on ARM. My primary NAS is PowerPC. My secondary (backup) NAS is ARM. It doesn't specifically mention PowerPC, but later it mentions an x86 processor is necessary. I guess I'm out of luck there.

BTW, the easier the implementation the better.

Livedrive doesn't have a specialized client software for Linux, but as long as your Nas supports ftp/sftp I think you should be able to use that to backup to your livedrive briefcase/account.

My Off-site backup is another NAS box located in another house. I used cloud backup in the past. Everything works great until you need to restore a large amount of data -- it takes forever.

I use Crashplan on my NAS.

The headless client isn't super-supported by Code42/Crashplan, but it works and Synology users have gotten it running. (It's a java application.)

Are you still liking Crashplan? I've seen mixed reviews.

At this point, I'm stuck between crashplan and carbonite http://www.cloudstorageboss.com/carbonite-review/

From what I can tell, carbonite has built in features specifically for nas backup.

I don't really anticipate my nas failing at any point...but my OCD is telling me to back it up.

Any suggestions?

Still use it, it's still fine for me.

The client software leaves a bit to be desired - I could see somebody liking other products better for that reason. But functionally I have no complaints.

I 've been using Crashplan also. I have been happy with it. It does take a little of tinkering to get it working but once working, it is good.
One of the initial issues is that crashplan only works with drives which are native. Mounted drives are invisible. The workaround is a batch file which tricks windows into thinking the mounted Synoology drives are native. I would like like to have someone develop an "approved" client interface... If either synology or Crashplan is listening....
