Automated collection information on SQL databases (patch level, version, backup)

What is the best way to do this? I know this isn't programming but rather scripting.. but how would you do this? I'm looking into Powershell.

I'd probably use SQL Agent and a script to collect the info and email it to myself.

I've looked at this but haven't seen where I can check if the database has been backed up or not

If you have a maintenance plan setup, then the backup history is stored in the msdb system database.
