I'm looking at building a system where the client will be running Autodesk Inventor with 1000+ parts. They don't want to spend too terribly much money, so I'm looking for best cost/performance ratio. Should I be looking at an X2 based system of Core2Duo? Anyone have any experience w/ Inventor?

I don't use inventor but I would suggest a Core2Duo, probably a E6600 w/ 4MB of Cache. Wait for the price drop after April 22nd and you can get it for $225.
I use Autodesk AutoCAD 2006 on detailed houses with file sizes of over 40MB. The E6600 would be more of a powerhouse for the intensity of the computations used by inventor.
Definitely go for the C2D E6600.

I don't believe Inventor is a multi threaded application so going dual core is not necessary if this is the only application that will be running.

Take a look here to see what Autodesk recommends.
