Isn't speed all relative, here in the us 80mph seems damn fast because most people are driving 65mph(atleast where I am from). I bet 150mph would not seem that fast if most are doing 120. Unless you glance to look at the roadside you wouldn't know how fast you're going. Heck, 190 would not be that fast if everyone did 160mph.

Id love the chance to take my new 2002 Passat on there... Im goin there next summer most likely, but not with my car... Ive had her up to around 125 on Alligator Alley (Runs across South Florida - Naples to Ft. Lauderdale) It used to be only two lanes, scary as hell when passing someone but they moved it up to 4 with a HUGE median. Usually no troopers either, and if there is, their very easy to detect. Hell its the middle of the everglades, about 100 miles of flat, swampy terrain.

What? What state did you get your license from? I can't even guess because I have my drivers license from ALABAMA and even it mentions the right-of-way when you reach a stop sign at the same time as someone else. No state's <insert anything here> can be worse than Alabama.

Yeah, and the ironic thing is that the Autobahn is *safer*! Wildlife protection helps too, less roadkill accidents.

Getting a license shouldn't cost a sh!tload of money, but it SHOULD be difficult to get. It's a joke here.. the driver's handbook doesn't even say anything about right-of-way when you reach a stop at the same time nor does it say what to do in an accident.. all you have to do to get your learner's is to pass a easy knowledge test and to get your full license all you have to do is show the saaq that you can drive in a straight line and turn. Wow!

THIS is the reason cars are so dangerous here in NA. My aunt got hit the other day on a divided highway by someone ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY! Can you believe that??? Her car was completely totalled, but she walked away with only a sprained arm, luckily.

the coolest thing about hte autobahn, and this is probably what makes it relatively safe, is that THERE IS NO, ABSOLUTELY NO, passing on the right. Makes traffic flow much more predictable.

Well, yamahaXS.
Have you been there lately? People pass on the right side anyway, they DO drive like maniacs.

It's nice when Autobahn is empty, very early in the morning. WoooooHoooo!!

Heh,... Quebec :) Where we have the worst drivers in the world and the drinking age is just a suggestion.

I guess that is why the Germans make some of the best luxury/sport cars IMO. I mean if you're going to be going 130 miles an hour you might as well be comfortable and damn well better be in a car that handles well. If it does not handle they will be peeling you off the pavement.

I saw a video of some of the accidents that happen on the Autobahn and they are truly horrific ie. decapitations, amputations and all sorts of grotesque stuff that speed and concrete can muster. There are less of them but when accidents do happen on the Autobahn they are truly horrendous.

Autobahn facts

>>Despite the widespread belief of complete freedom from speed limits, some speed regulations can be found on the Autobahns. Many sections, particularly those with dangerous curves, in urban areas, or with unusually constant heavy traffic, may feature speed limits ranging from 80 to 120 km/h (50-75 mph). In construction zones, the limit may be as low as 60 km/h (37 mph). Also, some sections now feature nighttime and wet-weather speed restrictions, and trucks are always regulated (see table below). Still, much of the Autobahn is unlimited, but there is a recommended limit of 130 km/h (81 mph). This recommendation is generally seen for what it is- an attempt by the government to cover itself without having to upset millions of Porsche and BMW owners/voters. However, if you exceed the recommended limit and are involved in an accident, you could be responsible for some of the damage costs even if you are not at fault.

Despite the general high speeds, the accident and death rate on the Autobahn is relatively low. Autobahn crashes account for only 10% of national traffic fatalities and, in fact, the fatality rate is lower on the Autobahn than on US Interstates.<<

Yes, you can pass on the right while driving the Autobahnen. I believe they changed the law about passing on the right in the early 90s. Remember hearing about it while over there.

Two other strict laws relative to the Autobahnen deal with the Geisterfahrer and those who drive fast in the fog.

Geisterfahrer is a driver who enters the Autobahn going the wrong way. I've seen this punished by jail time. The Verkehrsradiodienst or traffic advisory is good about warning drivers over the radio about Geisterfahrer. Even in remote areas. I had a Blaupunkt in my BMW which had a function that would pause the cassette tape in order to give the traffic report. Really cool.

The most spectacular and deadliest crashes I've ever seen in my life were partly due to the fog over there. 100 car pileups were common in the Fall. 20-40 people killed in each one. So, they deal rather harshly with those violations too.

There are some very beautiful stretches to drive over there. Particularly in the south in Bayern (Bavaria) as well as der Siegerland in the state of Nord Rheinland Westfalen.

Well, when you force the kiddies to wait 2 more years to get their license at 18, and make them go through a year-long series of difficult tests costing over $1,000, then we might just have better drivers that could handle the autobahn.

Hear, hear! I'm a big supporter of the much more stringent drivers licensing procedures that the Germans go through.

Insert COLORADO, not only do we have some of the worst drivers, but add on the fact that we have the highest rate of uninsured motorists in the entire country @ 35% so every 1/3 cars in a wreck is an uninsured motorist

That is very bogus indeed. You Colorado-ites need to get some local politicians by their short&curlies and have them clean up that situation. When I was a kid my mother almost bought it when an uninsured driver t-boned her going 60 in a 35 :| I say if you can't afford insurance, take the bus.

On the autobahn thing, I'll be picking up my new car in Munich in under a month and the anticipation is killing me! Can't wait to experience those fantastic roads in a car that was designed to run all day, year after year, at those speeds. Only downside is that it's not recommended to exceed 85mph during the break-in period (first 1000 miles or so) on the car. DOH!

You know, I heard once (very possibly a rumor) that it was forced labor during the war that built much of the autobahn. Fact or fiction?
