Hey all just built a new system (Abit IP-35, e4400, 2gig OZC 6400 RAM, ATI x1950xt) had installed windows XP pro SP2, drivers, a couple of games and done a few of the auto updates... then last nite last thing i did was turned off pc and installed 50 updates.

Today i turned on PC and it loads the 1st windows splash screen fine (with the timer bar passing across bottom), then after this all i get is a black screen and white mouse pointer :S

Then after a fews secs the machine reboots itself, same thing happens if i try safe mode or last working config...

So, i assume one of the updates has applied iself badly? As i have no data on there rly atm i am just going to re-install win XP sp2 and hope the same auto update does not go wrong again...

Any ideas as to what exactly went wrong and how i can stop it happening a second time around?

thanks all

Everyone experiences a problem similar to this at one point, however due to different hardware configurations and many different software setups, there are always a few things that have to be looked at to see exactly what caused it. For one, we have no idea what updates you had installed that may have caused the problem.

So we'll skip to what we can do about this situation.

There is a way to restore all your important windows files back to default by using the windows XP cd. What you will need to do is boot from the cd as if you were going to do a reinstall. Before your heart beat goes up, let me tell you we aren't going to reinstall and wipe everything out. :)

Ready? OK. When you have loaded up the Windows setup screen, it will ask you if you want to restore from the recovery console. No, we want to keep going. Next it will try to detect any previous Windows installatinos. Right here is where we want to prepare. It will say it has detected a previous installation and will ask you if you would to repair it. ("Should say press 'R' to repair"). Do this. It will restore all the important windows files, and don't worry about losing any files because that's not what it's doing here. Everything should still be the same(minus whatever corrupt files there may be).

Let me know how this goes!

thanks very much for the clear, concise reply... i have actually already put on a fresh install as i had next to nothing on there to lose (just wow + BF2). However, i will bear that in mind if anything unexpected happens with the new batch of updates :D
