Auto-sensing network cards and/or crossover cables?

Okay, I'm moving into an apartment with a friend of mine come January and I'm going to be setting up the lan. I have a few questions about my setup.

The setup:

1 P3 450 with 4 NICs installed. This will run linux/BSD as a firewall/router.
1 Duron 950. This will be a private little CS server/seti cruncher
1 Duron 1100. My roommate's computer
1 AXP 3200+ (with A7N8X deluxe and onboard ethernet). Mine.

Now, I'll be using a variety of NICs in the durons and P3 450, all 10/100 full duplex cards. My XP 3200 will be using the onboard ethernet port... prolly the 3com one. I already have a ton of straight through RJ45 cable and I'm too lazy to get a crimper etc so I want to know how likely it is that these cards will need crossover. I've heard a few things about how network cards are now able to auto sense how they are connected, thereby eliminating the need for crossover cables for NIC/NIC connections. Is this true?

I don't happen to have any info on the nics handy, but I know at least a few of them are the Linksys LNE 100TX cards, and one or two run on some Macronix chip I believe. Then there's my 3com integrated controller on my nforce2.

Eh, I just realized I don't really care... They're selling 10 ft crossover cables for $2 and 25ft for $3 at the local comp store :)
