hey guys, i drive a 1992 bmw 525i and was wondering if you guys could give me some help on buying a remote starter unit. i'm looking for one with keyless entry and maybe 1000-2000 ft range. any suggestions here? thanks a lot!!
 
thats alot of range, not sure if you can get them to work that far.. probably expensive if they do have that kind of range.
i am not sure if i can help, but if you go to a few stores and check out what they have, you can then go on the net and look for some product reviews, or do it the other way around.. to to epinions or something and look for some info there.. perhaps someone on this forum has a remote starter and can help, but thats just what i would do in your case 😛
i had one on my old car. it worked good.. but i can't remember for the life of me what it was called!! i would have recommended it.
 
I was able to hit about 750' rage by holding my remote next to one of the colums that made up the racking in Home Depot. under normal conditons it was maybe 250'. I don't think you can get one with a 1/4 - 1/3 mile range.

yes. what happens if you start a manual that is in "park"?. since park is 1st or reverse, you would have problems.

I would imagine that you'd have to leave the MT in neutral and set the parking break if you planned on using the starter. And that's only if it will work with a standard transmission.

EDIT: New cars require you to press the brake to start an automatic transmission, if they can bypass that, they can bypass the clutch sensor. Tricky to rig a sensor to detect if it's in gear though.
 
You can get them on M/T, but you have to remember to leave it in N. Of course you should always leave your car in gear when parked...
Also, a lot of newer cars won't start if the clutch isn't pressed, regardless of the shifter's position, so you have to override this as well.

I considered getting one for my Civic, but it got to the point where I was going to have to disable at least 3 safety/antitheft features just for a cool gee-whiz add-on. Not worth it IMO.

For an older car w/ auto? Might not be too bad.
 
My dad had one on his stick. It was a pain in the butt to make sure everything was set right to get it to start when you needed it. Don't bother.

man, remote start is so handy... seriously.. i used it when i used to leave work for the day. so nice to go outside into a warm car that's so toasty inside the windows have been cleaned from melting... it's fantastic.. 🙂

Exactly. It's just like keyless entry. Before you get it you're like "Is it so hard to just stick the key in the hole and turn?"
After you get it, you never want to go back 🙂

That's about it. It's more important when parked on an incline, but basically in the unlikely event of the parking brake completely failing, it will be harder for the car to start rolling if it's in gear.

i do... i do oil changes every 3k miles with fully synthetic blend.. at least i take care of my beast 🙂
