AUTO-LOGIN? - Can it be done with Win2000 or Win2003?

I notice that on WinXP Professional, if I simply leave my PASSWORD = empty (with return key)

WindowXP will boot straight into Desktop without asking me for which UserID I want to log on.

With Window2000, its default to a CONTROL-ALT-DELETE. Can't I by-pass this and boot straight into desktop?

you need to edit your group policies.

there is an option for 'do not require ctrl-alt-delete'

its under local computer policy/windows settings/security serttings/local policies/sexurity options/

If you are on a network, this is a very very bad idea.

Go into Users and Passwords in control panel, go to advanced tab, and uncheck "Require users to press Control Alt Delete before logging on". Then, go back to Users tab, and uncheck "Users must enter and username and password to use this computer. Click Apply, then exit.

I was fellowing your exact steps....I didn't even notice your joke "....local policies/sexurity options"

until I say to myself, I can't find this option anywhere? Boy did I feel dumb 😱

However, it didn't work, the Control-Alt-Prompt still pop up!

First of all - set a strong password for the administrator account. If you leave it blank, and you connect to the internet, it won't take long for your system to get hacked.

On Windows 2k:

Once you have set a good password. Log in as administrator. Go to control panel -> Users and passwords. Unselect "Users must enter a username and password". Click OK. You will be asked for the username and password for the automatic logon.

If you must use the admin account for general use, then you can do so here - but ideally you should use a normal user account for general work.

So far several years, and counting. Is that long enough? I haven't been hacked yet, and I have no password for my admin account and am constantly connected to the 'Net via DSL. And that's the one I use all the time. I also follow other security rules though. My point is that this is not that sure fire a way for someone to hack a machine, unless they use no other security.

You could also use TweakUI to autologin.

You could also try Tweak UI. It has the ablility to automatically enter the username and password.
