Auto insurance rates... (CA)

new car insurance isn't all that cheap, heh. I was quoted btwn $700 to $1400 per 6 months for the basic coverages (15/30/5, 1k med, uninsured motorist coverage)

I folded, and went with AIG. My premium is:

(EDIT. changed bodily injury, and collision coverage, as per Vi_Edit's recommendation. Thanks Vi_Edit!!)

Bodily Injury Liability 100k/300,000
Property Damage Liability 25,000
Medical Payments 1,000
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage 3,500
Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury 25,000/50,000

500/1000 comp/collision deductible.

Included w/ all AIG policies:
30/900 rental reimbursement
24 hr roadside assistance (which really, is crap unless you're w/ AAA)

I got this for $671 (edited price to reflect coverage changes) for 6 months.

damn. But then again, GEICO (the cheapest quote I found) was quoting me at $720/6mo. for a 15/30/5 policy, so this was essentially, a better deal.

Sigh. I know a lot of people pay waaay less than this. Grr, I have a perfect driving record too. No accidents, no tickets, no violations EVER since I started to drive @ 18.

I have a new car ('07 Mazda 3s) that is financed, I am 25 years old, and doing this solo.

$736 for 6 months for full-coverage on a brand-new car @ 25 is cheap, REAL cheap.

really?! SWEET. thanks! I was so used to paying waay less on my old beat up Ford Exploder. hahahaha.

Thanks ATOT for giving me reinforced assurement that I got a decent coverage 🙂. But ya, I was asking around on how each company's customer service is, and I got a mixed bag of reviews for AIG, but I really couldn't pass up their quote. Rrom my month long quest to find insurance, If found theirs to be the "best deal" from my search.

<arnold>Stop whining!</arnold>

NJ is worse - worst in the country. I was paying $2400 a year on a Civic with no blemishes on my record :Q

Try Esurance. I got my 06 Mazda 6 covered with roughly twice the limits than what you have for about $500 for 6 mo. I base my rate on 25,000 miles a year, perfect record, 24/m and a professional discount (engineering). Easy to purchase, all online, just have to fax or scan them some docs to prove you had insurance previously.

Customer service does pick up the phones quickly and help is avaliable 24/7 on basic questions, billing, and taking your claims. The actual agents that handle your claims are available during business hours only.

Take your deductible up to $1000 and raise your coverages. Those would barely cover a few days of serious medical care.

Bumping up the deductible should keep things close to even after raising the coverages.

CA people can thank the large number of illegals driving without insurance and the high theft rates.
NJ people can thank your state officials from limiting competition for your high rates.

dang 🙁.
I too, applied to professional discount of engineering, but was quoted at around $650 for the 15/30/5, 500/500.

arg. you got a really good deal.

i always thought I would be ok since I have med coverage from work. But ya, I will have to change my coverage a bit, since what you say, bottom line, does makes more sense. But I will have to check how much med coverage I have from work.

It's not coverage for you that you should be worried about - it's people in the other car. Your health insurance won't pay for them. Your car insurance does.

I work for State Farm and I came up with about $770 for the same coverages for you. Sounds like you got an OK deal.

ya, i just realized that 🙂. thanks! I just called them to change the collision to 1k, and bump up bodily injury. There was a 20 dollar difference between 25k and 100k, so, I just went with 100k

NJ is high depending on your age and what you drive. Plus it can vary alot company to company. shop around if you don't like what you are paying.

10 yrs ago, age 27 I was paying $2700 a yr for a 95 Transam full coverage with Screwdential.

now, age 37 I am paying $2200 a yr for a 2000 Mustang GT, a 2003, Nissan Frontier, and a 2005 Ford Freestar, all full coverage similar deductible and limits as the TA above with NJ Manufacturers. Yes $2200 for all three total.

on our new G35, we are paying ~1100/yr for the insurance as follows:

bodily: 100k/300k
private property: 50k
medical payment: 5k
deductible: $100/$250

This is with AAA. I think that in California, most companies do the driving experience rather than age (atleast thats what AAA does). For my G35, i bought it under mine(9yrs experience) and my father's name and his 40+ driving experience helps lower my insurance rate.
