Auto Insurance Rant!

So I'm cruising to the gym the other morning, when another driver rolls through a stop sign right into my car. He immediately gets out and says, "I'm sorry. I'll pay for this. My foot slipped off the brake."
Truth is, he never even used the brake, but no matter.
To make a long story short, the dirtbag has no insurance. Now I'm left holding the bag. I have something called uninsured motorist insurance just for this occasion, which carries a $500 deductible.
So, I pay, and this guy skates. :| Son of a !@#$%^&*
Gee, I wonder if my insurance company will raise my premium next renewal??

when my wife and I bought our new car a few months back I bought a disposable camera and keep it in the trunk

if you are in an accident take a picture and then write down the other person's info. Your insurance company can sue to get paid.

my wife got hit in her old car and the neighbors saw it and wrote down the plate #. She paid the deductible and it took almost 18 months for the insurance company to sue and reimburse us the $500. In the meantime we switched to Geico because they saved us 50% over what her old company wanted for 2004-2005.

Hell, sue the guy.
I would have called the cop righ there and then.
He might not have money but I'd sue him anyway.

Can you get arrested for driving with no insurance ??

I did not call a police officer to the scene because I had left my cell phone at home. After the accident, when I returned home, I then went to the local precinct and filled out an accident report.
And, sure, it's illegal to drive without insurance. But you need to be caught in the act. As soon as I realized this driver was uninsured I notified the police. They told me that unless the driver is caught in the act of driving without insurance, he isn't breaking the law. "It's not our problem", they said. "It's a civil matter."
Problem with that is I file a suit in small claims court. The filing fee and process server costs about $200. Then, assuming I win a judgement against the defendant, I still need to collect. We're talking about months and months of aggravation with the slim hope that I can squeeze blood out of a stone and collect damages from this guy.
I figure I'm better off letting my insurance company go after this guy, instead of me. They have greater resources and are better equipped to do so.
File this one under "Spit happens!"

More like file this under "It was irresponsible of me not to call the police." In Michigan, your driver would have been cited for Disregard Stop Sign (257.649), and No Insurance (500.3101) and would have been guilty of a misdemeanor for the insurance infraction.

Way to go. Now you're going to eat the cost instead of him.
