auto insurance question

both me and my older bro have drivers licenses but only he has a car. he has basic collision insurance. is it illegal for me to borrow his car? thanx

Shouldn't be, I borrow my parents' car on occasion (they need another driver, etc.).

I'm covered under their insurance when driving their vehicles.

Viper GTS

no, the insurance follows the car. But if you get in an accident and its your fault be prepared to pay for the repairs for HIS car.

the thing is the policy is under my bro's name and there are no other names in the policy

You are covered.. All my jobs have been insurance claims. Insurance Follows the car.

Well if you drive it enough and you don't put your name on the policy then they can decline to pay for it.

A policy is based on the car AND who drives it. So if oyu drive it a lot and they find that out, then they might not pay for YOUR accident. Of course they would probable not do this unless it was a major accident, 100K+

When a guy pulled out in front of me while I was on my motorcycle they have asked me at least 4-5 times WHO WAS DRIVING THE OTHER VEHICLE, so yes it does matter. Of course I expect my settlement to be in the high 5 digits to low 6's.

Are you sure it's the same in the U.S.? I was under the impression that your only covered on someone else's insurance if you're over 26. I could be wrong of course. 🙂

Well, im from the US.. Just recently moved here to Canada.. But you do bring up a good point. Some insurance companies dont cover under 25 drivers. But they are few and far inbetween. I used to work for GE/Colonial Penn Insurance.. and I also worked for NJCure insurance. Those under 25 drivers rules are normally seen on mature drivers insurance policies.. It helps keep their rates a little lower. But to borrow a car for a few days. More than likely its covered.

Best thing to do is call the insurance comapny up and ask them if your name needs to be on the policy, if so how much? It will be a whole lot less then getting your own policy.

Most insurance companies wont answer/give any information out about another persons policy. BUT you could call and ask if you borrowed the car for the day if you would be covered. I wouldnt suggest saying any extended period of time because its not like you are going to drive it constantly. You are only borrowing it. OR call the insurance company pretending you are your brother. Ask if "your brother" borrows your car is it still covered in the event of an accident. You will need his policy number to make this call.

Yeah, that happened to my roommate a few years ago. His settlement was $100,000, but after he paid his lawyer and the 10% of his medical bills that he was responsible for, he was left with $42,000. Probably not worth it for never being able to feel his left leg below the ankle again. His settlement could have been higher, but $100,000 was all the girl was insured for, and suing her for more would have bankrupted her anyway.
