Inspite of enabling the 'Auto insert notification' option, the CD once inserted will never start automatically - any idea why ?

Check the following location in your registry:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]

Then look to see if there are any NoDriveAutoRun keys within it, If you delete any named NoDriveAutoRun you should have your Auto Run enabled again (mind you backup your registry before doing any modifying) You can also edit the key, but I'm not to sure on how the information is stored in that key.

Do you have any "Tweak" utilities installed. Most of them allow you to disable/cutomize auto insert, but if you do disable it, it will show in the device manager that it is still enabled.
You may have accidently disabled it.

Some Progs that will do this: (Usually allows you to diable audio and/or data auto insert)

TUI98
Tweaki
Tweakie
X-setup

Luck!

It's best, I think, to keep it off, since often you simply want to explore the cd. If you want to run the cd you can select autorun from its right-click menu, double-click autorun.inf, or double-click the install program or whatever.
