My router is randomly connecting me at 1 mbps instead of the 11 mbps that it should be. I have excellent connectivity and am on network channel 4, which none of my neighbors use. I do not understand why it randomly puts me at 1 mbps al the time! I know it is a feature in the router called auto-fallback but I am wondering why it does this at such high signal strength.

I tried using linksys live help and this was the conversation....

Depak Kumar Sharma(36950): Hi, my name is Depak Kumar Sharma(36950). How may I help you?
Phillip: Hello
Phillip: Have you read my question?
Phillip: My router has been putting me in auto-fallback to 1 mbps a lot lately
Depak Kumar Sharma(36950): Please let me know that.
Phillip: and there is no reason why
Phillip: I am using Firmware Version: Alchemy-V1.0 v3.37.6.8sv , and it is a linksys WRT54GS router, transmitting at 50 mw
Phillip: Signal strength does not fluctuate from Excellent, so I do not see why it would lower my connection speed below 11 Mbps
Depak Kumar Sharma(36950): I do understand your concern and I would be glad to assist you with the same.
Phillip: Well can you help ?
Phillip: Is there some way I can keep my connection running at 11 Mbps?

He didn't respond over the next 40 minutes so I have to assume he left to get further lessons in English as they are obviously needed.

The only channel that is actually "free" are 1,6,11 the rest overlap. Try one of those

As pointed out above, choose the better of channels 1, 6, or 11.

The best way to determine which is better (IMO) is to use NetStumbler (www.netstumbler.com) to monitor the band and see which channel is least-used and shows the least amount of interference.

If you are using a Laptop, try setting the AP antennas horizontally. Otherwise, set them straight up vertical ... don't do the "It looks cool" 45 degree tilt ... it's useless and only guarantees that every host will be an additional ~1.5 - 3dB down in signal.

Good Luck

Scott

You might try moving the AP around a little too. The wavelength is only ~5" , so it might not take much of a movement to make a difference.
