I recently sold my truck and had the best response from Autotrader. I actually think the Autotrader site sucks, but people use it. I actually got reasonable responses from CL...but I sold through Autotrader.

Yea I hate Autotraders. It use to be better btu I think they changed soemthign a long time agao and then everybody found out about craigslist and started using it.

What is the car. Year, make, model, and options/milage if you are selling.

If looking then add eBay and that cover the big ones I look at.

Can't hurt to try Facebook Marketplace.

I think eBay lets you list for free now. Here's some details on selling through eBay Motors: http://www.getrichslowly.org/blog/2010/09/21/how-to-sell-your-car-on-ebay-motors/

I've only had to sell one car and it sold quickly on CL, for 3x what CarMax wanted to offer me. Then again, it only sold for ~$1200.

I'll be selling another car soon, this time in the $4K range, so we'll see which method works better.

I've noticed that everyone who has had a good experience selling a car over CL has done it with a beater.

Not that it matters so much but I'd be selling my 1998 240SX SE and buying a 2007-2009 Honda Element SC.

I bought a car advertised on Autotrader, it was a fluke though, I'd been searching CL pretty exclusively simply because of the volume of vehicles listed. I don't know why it didn't occur to check Autotrader first though, anything that looks like a good deal on CL has a salvaged title or some serious problems. I have a car with some damage I plan to list in the next couple days, I figured I'd put it on Craigslist and see what kind of responses I get. A co-worker has had his GTI on craigslist asking less than bluebook, but still more than $10k, in over a month he's only had a couple of inquiries that were far from serious.

Car forums specific to your desired make? For Vettes, GTOs, Camaros, and Firebirds, and even a lot of other sports cars, LS1tech.com vehicle classifieds and local classifieds have WAY cheaper prices than any of those, from bone stock to track cars.

This. The market / classified section of the enthusiast community website for that car.

You're likely to get a higher price from a more mature buyer for a car that is tastefully done and taken care of since those kinds of people know what to look for, know what the car is worth, and want a car that hasn't been beat on, etc. vs some random dude on craigslist or ebay looking for a dirt cheap bargain.

For smaller niche market cars there just isn't enough volume on dedicated forums though...also as a seller as mentioned people are expecting a major discount on book value.

I am going to update the OP with the list so far.

This. Sold my last car in three days, using an enthusiast site, for a great price.

I had been looking for cars for 5 or 6 months ($8-10k) and finally found a good one on Craigslist . My local auto trader was 99. 9% dealers. Most of the cars I found on Craigslist in that range were people wanting dealer prices for cars. I had just missed a couple along the way but patience is definitely the key...

I just sold a Nissan Versa via autotrader. worked well, good response. craigslist blows, bunch of people who just contact you to waste your time and offer you thousands less then you're asking.

I bought my previous car through Autotrader and enjoyed the experience. Sure the site could be a little better, but it got the job done.

I agree that if you are selling below 5-7k CL is a good choice; otherwise Autotrader is recommended here. The local papers here are EXPENSIVE, and you pay per week. I would never post there myself. The prices are rediculous.

I've been using this multi-search engine lately - http://www.autotempest.com

That's a good site. I had to load it in compatibility mode in IE9 (in case anyone has problems of nothing happening when you submit).

Links Carsdirect.com, CL, ebay motors, oodle.com, cars.com, autotrader.com, automotive.com.

Noticed a lot of cars are listed on EveryCarListed.com

ebayclassifieds.com (a.k.a. Kijiji by ebay ... craigslist wannabe) is another site.
cars.com and yahoo autos have same listings.

I think among car buy/sell portals craigslist gets the most traffic from buyers/sellers/dealers/web-robots.

Because of high volume of visitors to Craigslist, a good deal is sold withing couple of hours of the post. The list is monitored by resellers, used car dealers etc. There are lot of people doing business selling cars and listing them in the 'owners' section of the craigslist. They are the ones that push the price up. Often they get flagged too for mis categorized. Also if the person isn't in a rush to sell the car then s/he would try to make money on it.

Best to know the market value of the particular (model-year) car you want to buy and be ready to strike the deal as soon as you find one.
