This weekend I'll be going to the DMV with the buyer of my car and we'll be putting his name on the title. If I remember correctly we will be charged for the title change (I don't have the original title) and we will be charged TAX from the sale. I'm the one selling the car to him, who is responsible for the title fee and tax? What is the best way to swing this?

Suggestions?

What russ said is the way it works in illinois too. If I want to sell my car all I have to do is sign the title and hand it to the new owner, he has to take it to the dmv and worry about all that.

Why are you going with him? Sign it, give it to him and say get lost. (after you have the money of course)

Like a dumbass I lost the title. So now I'm stuck buying a new title and probably paying for tax.

You really should call the dmv, in illinois to get a new title its a mail process and takes weeks. If its like that there you might not be able to sell the cara until you have it in your hands........

It's really too late to have a new one sent to me. He's already waited for a week until I finished finals and I'm meeting him on saturday.

What I'm trying to tell you is that you may very well get to the dmv and say you want to transfer the title to him. They will ask for it, you will say you lost it, they will say tough then and you'll have a mad buyer. I'm just suggesting you call and check that they're willing to do the transfer without you having a title.....

Ok. This is what I'm going to do. Go to the licensing place and get an affidavit releasing the interest of my car, write out a bill of sale, give all that to him and he can go to the DMV and transfer everything himself. Sound good?
