Autistic HS team manager (b-ball) put in for a token appearance wait til' you see

Wow, had no idea this happened that long ago. It's kind of fascinating howard powerful the facebook reposting machine can be. I saw this on at least 4 different peoples walls, all of them unrelated to each other. Someone prbably found this old video, thought it was awesome, put it on their facebook wall, and the next thing you know the entire world is watching it again, thinking it's the latest news.

The best part isn't that he did so well. It was that everyone was so happy for him. Even before he sunk a shot people were up cheering for him because he made it on to the court. It's awesome to see a community support a kid with special needs.

I spent some time volunteering with autistic children when I was a teenager. The ones that had family and friends that were very supportive made so much more progress. The kids that didn't have support just seemed to wall themselves off more from the world.

This was a huge story a while back. All over Sportscenter and sports radio, but if you're not a rabid sports fan you may have missed it. Definitely worth a repost IMO.

Love the story, but why is this being reposted everywhere? A lot of my friends have been sharing it on Facebook the last couple of days.

Clearly one of the great youth stories of all time.

He went on to be invited to many events including the nba all star game iirc (and espy's?) and has gotten to hang out and meet many professional athletes since this has happened. I hope he's doing well today.

Hahaha I never saw this until now. The end of the "Ballin" episode in season 2 of The Boondocks has to be based off this.

There's gotta be a name for this right? Like the new generation of kids growing up and "discovering" shit from years ago.

I know what you mean. I mean we all miss stuff from time to time but there's a whole bunch of people who are discovering internet memes from 5 years ago and thinking it's new.

I was going to say, when did Bob Shieffer come back as an anchor at CBS 🙂

Then I realized it was from 5 years ago, but great story regardless. I wonder what Jason McElwain is up to today?

I'll probably sound like an ass here, but does high functioning autism affect your ability to play sports?

I'm not trying to sound like a dick, I just don't know that much about it. My nephew was diagnosed with Autism, and he plays every sport under the sun. I'm a little unclear on why this kid wasn't able to play on the team, and if the autism had a role in him not making the team.

Not sure but it didn't seem to affect his ability to shoot.

Because this is the internet. Waht was old is new again for a new generation of people that don't fact check or look at any information.

Autism covers a wide spectrum of developmental disabilities. What's sad though is they keep including more symptoms and increasing the number of kids "diagnosed" with Autism. It sounds more shocking when they say 1 in 100 kids will have Autism instead of 1 in 500 or 1 in 250, which is what it used to be.

If a kid has some issues with socialization, but is capable of speaking and conveying his/her thoughts, I don't really think that should classify as Autism, as some people just aren't articulate or well spoken.
Now kids like my daughter, that at 10 years old, have no speech and absolutely no communication skills at all, through hand gestures or even grunts are Autistic.
I've lived the last 9 years with an severely autistic child and the kid in this story may fall under the spectrum now defined as autism, It's not what help him back from playing, it was the coaching staff that didn't want to risk giving him a chance to actually be a part of the team. Part of find a cure for Autism is educating people on Autism. Just because someone has it doesn't mean they can't be productive or capable.
