A friend of my parents drove across the entire country (from Perth to Sydney) with his family.

I agree, thats why I'm just trying to focus on Sydney and Cairns.... even then i'm worried about packing in too much.... how was Ayers Rock?

Ayers Rock is ok. I mean it's just a big effin rock out in the middle of nowhere, but it's kind of cool to see I guess. Depending on the time of year/weather they will let you hike up it.

I did the east coast two years ago in about two weeks. Was fun. I actually just landed in Sydney a few days ago and am heading towards melborne tomorrow.

Sydney sucks, its just another big city. Feels like Toronto/Vancouver. But you're p,rob ably flying here anyway and if your heading to the blue mountains then yeah. But otherwise don't spend too much time here. Fly to Cairns and drive down the coast back to Sydney? The whole coast is very touristy and you won't see much of "real" Australia. Come with me into the outback for that! ;)

Yeah we are flying into Sydney so I figure we'll spend a couple days in the city max....definitely going to head to the blue mountains and the Jenolan Caves.... I think I will try to maximize my time at Cairns/Port Douglas/Daintree..... I would love to go into the outback but i dont want to waste too much time traveling from place to place.... where would you recommend to see the "real" Australia?

Perth - too windy
Darwin - too many crocodiles
Cairns - Too hot
Sydney - too many non Australians.

Brisbane - Just right

Have not been to the east coast yet, furthest i got was Melbourne and Tasmania last time. Adelaide was kinda boring, Melbourne was ok, Hobart was probably my favourite city
