Yesterday's Variety reported that MGM and New Line are still talking about whether the latter company will get to use "Member" in the title for Austin Powers 3. According to the trade mag, in exchange for allowing New Line to use the allusion to MGM's classic Bond picture Goldfinger, New Line would attach trailers for the next Bond film, Die Another Day, as well as other, to be determined MGM pics, to Austin Powers 3 and The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers -- and New Line Cinema would pick up the bill.
Of the two studios, New Line has the upper-hand now. While it cannot use "Goldmember" because of its similarity to the Bond film's title, parody law allows for the studio to select from other choices such as "Live and Let Shag", "You Only Shag Thrice", "Never Say Member Again" and "License to Shag". Final approval must come from the Broccoli family which controls the James Bond licence.
Odds are good that the two movie studios will work out some kind of deal to allow New Line to return to using Goldmember again.
