Audiophiles: Which speaker system?

I have a SB Live! card, and I'm looking for a 4sat + sub system for under $150 with focus on sound.

Right now the toss up is between:
1) Altec Lansing ATP 5
2) Creative FPS2000 Digital

The Creative is cheaper than the Altec Lansing by about $50, but I'm still leaning towards the Altec Lansing.

I'd rather go for a Boston Acoustic or Klipsch but those are too expensive for me right now.

I have the FPS2000, and I think they sound very good.

Perhaps not the loudest and the most bassy but depending on the size of your room you should find them more than acceptable.

I find the clarity on them to be excellent for the size of speaker.

I would recommend them to anybody looking for a good value, clean sounding 4 sat+sub system.

I'll put in a vote for the Klipsch Promedia V.400. It's only an analog connection to the sound card, but man do these things sound good. Plenty of bass and powerful satellites. They're even THX-certified to boot. Only drawback: they cost about $250 and they're pretty hard to find.

They're out of his budget but worth the stretch.

Did you read his post Erasmus? An extra $100 is quite a stretch.

If the choice is between those two I'd go with the Altec's. I'd also take the Altec ACS56's over the FPS2000's. ACS56's can be had for cheaper than the FPS2000's. In fact I have a pair of ACS56's that I don't use...need to sell them! Probably have to be local though since the box is heavy and shipping would be a little much.

get two sets of aura aspect30s from egghead auctions for around $50 shipped (i think) and spend $100 on a self powered sub.. niether of those systems u mentioned have MDF wood enclosure or a tweeter....

my altec ac45.1 has mdf sub enclosure...but it's only 3-piece...i think two speakers sitting on a stand behind my chair would look incredibly retarded, not to mention being annoying...

if i were u, i'd get the fps2000 if they're 50 cheaper...

the aspect30 do have nicer and richier mids and highs than my acs48s i previously owned. i would imagine acs45.1 is on par with 48...

another vote for the BA4800's
I used to have the FPS2000's and in my opinion the BA4800's blow them out of the water.
Much tighter bass and cleaner mid/high range.
You won't be disappointed. For the price, you really can't get any better than these.

Audiophiles and $150 speakers don't belong in the same topic.

Also try the search feature, you should all sorts of stuff on this topic.

If you want good sound (thus the *audiophile* in the topic) get a pair of good headphones. For that price you can get a pretty decent pair.

Grado
Sienhieser (sp?)
and some of Sony's
are all good picks. Seriously, if you have any hi-fi shops around where you live stop in and ask to demo a pair or two. Make sure they are of fairly low impedance, sound cards don't have a whole lotta "oomph".

I do have to say, my Sennheiser HD570s blow the socks off almost any *computer* speakers I have heard. The only thing that sounded better was a full home theater system (5.1 Dolby Digital) with Velodynes all the way around aincluding 12" sub. It also had a $800 Harman/Kardon receiver tho...

Go for the Altec Lansings, they are definitely better than the creative speakers, IMHO. They look better too 😉

But if you have a little more money to spend I would definitely suggest this, and this is more "audiophilic" so to speak. Get this:

Creative 5.1 Digital Speakers

They sound great!!

EDIT- I need to pay more attention and READ!! 🙂

This is a wise man. You chose the right speakers, you will not be disappointed. This is the best set of multimedia speakers on the market, for that price. No questions asked. Take it from me, or Wingznut over there. Good choice.

Get a pair of Naim SBL £2.5K should see you ok
but then you need some amp 4 x 150watt rms mono amps with active cross over plus power supplies should give 1.5 kw peak

Sorry thought it was a Audiophile request

I listened to the ATP5's the other day. They were not too bad, but the sound wasn't as rich or full as the BA's.

Ancient, be sure to give us your thoughts on the speakers when you get them.

Good choice, you won't be able to beat them for $150.

I wouldn't suggest buying a speaker system especially targeted for the computer user (the Creative sets for example). It's almost always better to buy a 'real' speaker system from an audio shop or so...I got a fully featured $900-5.1 speaker set for roughly $250 (and it was new...), connected my Sherwood receiver with the digital out of my SB Live! or my Hollywood Plus and DVD's definitely rock now... 🙂
Anyway...don't be a scrooge when buying new speakers. It costs more in the long term!

I have a set of ACS54 and considering that I use my computer for movies, gaming, music I'd like to get better speakers.

However, these speakers were for a friend of mine who didn't want to spend $150 because . . . well he didn't want to spend more (working part-time while in college to pay for all his computer stuff, just did a recent upgrade too).

Personally I would've gone with a minimum $300 set on my next speaker upgrade, because the only real things that last long term with a computer is the monitor and speakers, maybe the case.
