Audiophiles: Help me pick floorstanding loudspeakers!

I'm looking to spend anywhere from $1000 to $1400 on a pair of floorstanding loudspeakers that will be used extensively for both music and movies. They will eventually be paired with a very strong subwoofer (probably something from SVS) so they don't need to have super low bass extension. I'm not looking to go way overboard with these things but I do plan on keeping them for a good long while so I view this purchase as a pretty hefty investment which is why I'm being so careful with my choice. Here's what I'm looking at so far:

Klipsch Reference Series RF-5 or RF-7,

Paradigm Studio/60 or Studio/80,

Definitive Technology BP30, 2006TL, or 2004TL

I've listened to the Klipsch speakers quite a bit so far and am pretty impressed with them. They've got a very full sound and seem very fluid. As with every Klipsch speaker, they seem to be stronger in the highs and lows than with the midrange but I don't really think they come across too bright or too boomy. That is especially true for the RF-5 speakers. The RF-7s seem almost too big to me and are more overwhelming than natural. The RF-5s sound very fluid to me and, like I said, impressed me quite a bit especially considering their price. Plus, the cherry finish on them is just gorgeous! :)

I've only heard the Paradigms a little and they are probably the sharpest, most precise speakers I've heard. They sounded almost harsh to my ears, probably because I'm simply not used to such accurate response in a speaker. They had a very full sound, like the Klipschs, but seemed to have a lot more going for them in the midrange. I suppose they sound more natural than the Klipsch offerings but it would certainly some getting used to their sharpness. At my price point, I think they only come in a black finish, as well. It looks nice, sure, but it's no cherry woodgrain.

I have not yet heard the Def Tech speakers but that will be taken care of before the afternoon is up. I've heard good things about Def Tech and will report soon my findings.

I've already checked out Audio Review and done some reading but at this level of speakers everything seems very subjective to personal taste. I really don't think I can lose with any of my choices. If you have opinions, experience with these or other comparable speakers, speak up! This speaker buying thing is a joint effort between me and all of ATOT... your opinion matters. Tell me what you think. :D

You can't ask this question without telling us which amp/receiver that you have/or going to get. Good speakers requries a good amp.

If you have a good Amp already, I suggest you look into a pair of magnepan MG12 or MG1.6.

If you don't have a receiver yet, get a NAD receiver + a pair of Magnepan MMGs
If you have a receiver already but isn't that powerful, get a Odyssey Stratos 2-ch Amp for powering the mains and let the receiver power the center and rears. http://www.odysseyaudio.com/stratos.html. Oh and get a pair of MMGs with it

These 3 options should be in your price range.

Although if you're doing piecemeal system upgrades, I'd much rather have good speakers on a mediocre amp than vice versa.

But I've only got Bowers and Wilkins 602.5 speakers, so I'm not in that price range yet (I probably paid around $1400 for my 5.1 setup without the subwoofer).

Paradigm :D
Given those three, you'll be happiest with your purchase after 6 months with the paradigm.

I absolutely love my Klipsches. The only two brands I've heard who I would consider upgrading to are Magnepan and Thiel, but they're probably out of your price range.

If you don't mind used you can get some great bargains on high end speakers. I picked up a pair of Magnepan MGIII's last year with new ribbons for under $700.

The MG 1.6 QR is ~$1600. The MG 12 should be cheaper...
If you have the space and ability to power them, theyre almost impossible to beat!

I was in a similar situation, although my budget was $1000 or less. I have a very powerful M&K subwoofer so I decided I did not need mains with built-in subs.

I ended up with the Boston Acoustics VR950 speakers. I get impressive sound from them (combined with the VR910 center) and I didn't break the bank. Boston stuff can be a little tougher to find, but I recommend an audition if you get a chance.

I have a buddie with the Paradigm and they sound amazing. He has the Onkyo 936 with seperate decoder as a match up. He didn`t cut any corners with his patch cords or wire and the sound smokes my set up. Mine is the Onkyo 747 and PSB Stratus series speakers and PSB Subsonic 3i subwoofer. But i have to say my bass from the 3i tops his from his Sony(not sure what model). From your choices it`s clear to me that i would go with the Paradigms. Just my 2c.

Some of these recommendations are like comparing apples to oranges if someone is used to the sound of Paradigm's, Definitive Tech or Klipsche. The Maggies and Vandersteen's couldn't sound more different.

My question to you is what type of electronics are you going to be using? What type of music?

Wow, that's a great set of speakers to be picking from...I'm a Paradigm fan myself, but I've also heard the Klipsch and DefTechs before as well. I'd say that out of those three, it will depend mostly on the source, and what type of music you're listening to. If you think the Paradigms are "harsh", that's true, the tweeters are pretty bright, but I wouldn't say any more so than the Klipsch horn which is notorious for being very bright. The DefTechs are amazing speakers, and they have many followers...the soundstage is rather different than the other two, due to the tower being of a bipolar design. The first time I heard a set, I was very surprised at the different sound they make. If you're a big movie watcher more than a music-listener, I might suggest Klipsch and Paradigm over the DefTechs. If I had to rank them, I'd make it Paradigm, Klipsch, DefTech.

Other than that, it's up to your tastes, but another speaker that is very well regarded in that range is the PSB Goldi...I strongly suggest you check them out.

Your friend must be a speaker wire weenie. I guarantee you, it's the speakers and components that sound amazing, not the wire.

Used MMG for $400
Used MMGs for $380
Used MG 1.6 for $1000

If you are looking for a HT package, check out the Bohlender Graebener Radia X series 5-piece set.

For High quality speaker wires, buy a 500ft box of Cat5e cables, use two strands to make an awesome speaker cable. (for each strand, twist each pair together, then twist 4 pairs together). Use cable ties to tie the two strands together.

For a good flat response subwoofer, check out the Hsu Research VTF-2 and VTF-3's They are stereophile class A rated I think
