Audiophiles: Difference between software and hardware EQ?

Does it really have a difference to the human ear? Is one really better than the other? I personally use software EQ and was wondering if I would experience better sound with a hardware-based one.

This is on the computer, of course.

I've used both in my 35 years of doing sound. I must say that todays softwarez are sounding very very good.
HOWEVER, if I were doing stage monitors, I would want a knob I could grab in an instant as opposed to drilling down through menus.
But since you specified "on the computer" I would not be hesitant to use a software based one.

if you use eq, you need a good parametric eq (velodyne SMS-1 is very reasonable at 700$) and only use it for frequencies below 80hz. Above 80hz, just use Room acoustic panels like RealTraps.

Behringer DCX2496 for half that FTW! 😉
