Audio - what to use?

There is no "Audio" section, so I figured this would be the best sub-forum to post in.

Just got a new ASUS P8P67 Pro motherboard

I also have an older CHAINTECH AV-710 sound card

The Chaintech was highly regarded at the time, but is about 6-7 years old at this point. The P8P67 PRO is brand spankin' new, but nontheless, it is onboard audio.

Which should I use? Thanks for your help.

On-board unless you are an audiophile, but if that's the case your current sound card wouldn't suffice anyway.

Agreed. On-board sound has improved quite a bit over the years. I haven't used a dedicated sound card in over 3 years. (No Vista drivers for my old Soundblaster card.)

Thank you both. Each of your inputs were also very helpful in my parts selection process for the new build, detailed in the "First build since 2004" thread. I have obtained all of the new parts, and will be assembling today or tomorrow. I will be sure to update my other thread, detailing the finalized components. Hopefully, I will even be able to add a few photos!

I loved the Chaintech AV-710 cards! I had three of them BITD for various systems, and I think I still have at least one or two of them.

These days I use onboard. If there is something wrong with your onboard sound (which can happen but you won't know until you try it) then go with the card. But, try onboard first.

The other thing is that the AV-710 was a favorite of budget audiophile modders, so if you've upgraded the OPAMPs of your card, then maybe stick with it.

I don't even know what an OPAMP is. But it sounds delicious!
