Would it be frowned upon if I were to sit in the back row of a lecture hall with a video camera and powerful directional mic mounted on my hat, connected to a laptop where I'm recording the whole thing?

Figure I could easily get like $10/student for a week of lectures, and in a packed freshman lecture, that's a shatload of potential.

Yes, I'm insane.

Ask the professor for a permission before recording the class, that way you'll be legally safe. Or not. I don't really know.
You could make a lot of money, assuming the students were interested in what the prof has to say. Most of them aren't.

You probably wouldn't be allowed to. That's the profs and university's intellectual property.

I dont think you can, but in a freshman class everyone knows that the leactures are worthless (its all about the book) higher level classes usually have more relaince on notes and speeches, but they are usually smaller and the camra would be distracting. I sould imagine oyu can ask for the prof's permission ahead of time and outright lie, saying you use it as a learning aide. He might go for that, just be careful about seling em when you are still in his class or when you might have to take him again in later years b/c well you might get crapped on

Scaling back, douchebag. I demand more photochops.

Also, I'm not REALLY considering doing this, I'm not THAT big of a nerd. I'm just bored.

The lectures are owned by the lecturers. You'd need their permission to sell or even use them. At Cal there is a professor who doesn't even allow people to record his lectures for personal use...
