What do those values represent? Is it #speakers.#receivers, or #satellitespeakers.#subwoofers or what?. I have a 5.1 system (details in system rig) but I notice that two of the speaker units have 3 individual speakers (hi low mid). Always had a vague idea what the numbering meant but I just wanted it in concrete.

The first number means the number of speakers. The second number is the number of subwoofers. Some people have rigged up 2 pair of Klipsch 2.1s to make a Promedia 4.2. :Q

So what exactly is a 7.1 system?

Are there discrete channels for FL/FR, mid left/mid right, RL/RR and a sub?

Discrete FL/FC/FR, ML/MR, RL/RR + sub.

You have the basic idea, you just forgot the center.

SDDS is the only 7.1 format I know of and it's only used in theaters.

Currently there is only one truly discrete 6.1 consumer format, being DTS-ES 6.1 Discrete.

Thanks.

I just bought a new receiver and was hoping it wasn't obsolete before unpacking it like my older one.
