I'm looking for a util which can switch between the active audio devices (ideally input and output together) in Windows 7 by a keyboard shortcut (even when in background), which I can then macro.

Any suggestions? Free or pay, don't care but it has to work properly.

OK, I gotta ask: if you are wearing headphones, your external speakers are pretty much useless, aren't they? Or do you listen to them with your headphones on? My externals cut out if I plug headphones into my front port, so it's an either/or setup. Just wondering.

Well - one use, as for example the PC I'm on now, is to switch between the USB headset and the headphone on the onboard audio interface (this particular machine isn't wired to a set of speakers).

So in your situation, what you can do is buy one of these (http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/sound-cards/audio-advantage-amigo-ii.aspx) and use that for plugging in your headphones.

Unfortunately the utility won't switch inputs, but I'm getting a feel of how it works since it was made using Autoit - so in theory if I have the inclination I can code the same thing for the recording device.
