Audio Sounds Deeper than normal, Sample rate issue?

I just picked up a computer at a thrift shop for some friends, and it works fine except for the sound. I haven't been able to find a model name or number on the motherboard, but it's an AOpen box. Celeron 1.7ghz, 512mb RAM, Windows XP, using the onboard audio.

So, the audio plays, but it's as if it's been changed to a slower sample rate in an audio editor. I can't for the life of me think of what the issue could be. I looked briefly for updated drivers, but not knowing what it is made that hard. I did update Direct X to 9.0c.

Thoughts? What are places I can look for more information?

So, this was a real quick update, but they just happened to have a broken computer in the corner with a soundblaster card in it. Problem fixed!

Meanwhile, I am insanely irritated at my inability to figure out what was wrong with the onboard sound. Anyone have any help for that still?
