Why does audio skip and pop?

I have the system listed 4 responses down and my audio is always skipping and popping. WHY? And how can I fix it?

All kinds of things. Could be as simple as incorrect drivers. Or as complex as your video card hogging all the PCI bus on an older machine. You'd have to provide more info, particularly on your system configuration.

more info:

celeron 633/792
SBLive MP3 5.1
Radeon VE
'Lucky Star' MB
IBM 45gig
384 RAM
Win2k
Logitech wireless scroll mouse
Logitech wirelss internet keyboard

I have thought of the mouse thing before. The skips happen randomly however it appears. I can be using everything and skips/pops will happen and I will be sitting idly and skipping will happen similarly. I have checked my processer usage and it stays low. I have lots of Ram free and I have tried rotating Ram to see if that might have been a problem. I have not tried replacing the mouse. The MP3Live is not the first card this has happened to. The SB is replacing my old Siig card which skipped as well. I have not resorted to reinstalling 2k or venturing to another OS. I have another HD here so that could be an option but one I would like to delay unless absolutely necessary.

Thanks for your help. I can provide more info if its desired.

The problem has not fixed itself and I don't even know where to start. Thanks for responding and giving a fellow ATer a hand

It might be worthwhile to try the SB Live in a different PCI slot. The one it's currently in might be sharing a IRQ with something else in use. SB's frequently don't take to kindly to sharing, even if on a ACPI system with Win2K.

In "Device Manager" the SBLive shows as being alone on IRQ 9. I had tried changing PCI Slots in the past with the Siig to no result.

Aside from IRQ interference what else could be up?
