Audio setup question

First, my setup:
Samsung LN40A550 LCD
Sony HTCT-100 Soundbar (w/ external subwoofer)
PS3

I currently have my PS3 hooked up via HDMI to the TV, then the audio is connected to the subwoofer by an optical cable. My question is: would I get better sound quality if I plugged the PS3 directly into the subwoofer by an optical cable completely bypassing the TV? I know my TV's normal speakers sound like crap compared to the sound bar, so I'm not sure if the audio processing in the TV would be reducing the quality that I COULD be experiencing.

Thanks,
Mike

you can try it, but frankly, since you are talking about digital cable, you aren't going to get much, if any difference at all. You can try it to make sure, but I wouldn't expect any change. There is no processing being done by the TV. The processing is being done by your subwoofer if I understand your setup correctly.

If your TV cannot pass 5.1 through the HDMI and out the optical, then you would lose the surround information which could potentially lower the impact of the pseudo-surround of that setup.

I didn't think of that. Although, his speakers are 3.1, so there wouldn't be that much lost, but it is something to keep in mind.

The samsung website wasnt very clear about the capabilities of the TV in this regard. Also, it didn't list any fiber optic audio output either...
